INJURIES HURT
As we saw with Peyton Manning in 2011, injuries to certain players can ruin a teams’ season. The question was even posed whether Manning should have received the MVP trophy last year because of the subtraction of his skills sending his team down into the depths of a 2-14 season.
As with all things, there are good and bad traits that each injury brings. Of course we would never suggest anything is more important than the health of the NFL players, who sacrifice so much of themselves physically and mentally for our entertainment. But in business terms, Manning’s injury gave the Colts the excuse to move on, and also provided a number 1 draft pick with which to select his replacement, Andrew Luck.
This same scenario has played out before with Drew Brees leaving San Diego to make room for Philip Rivers, but that hasn’t worked out in San Diego’s favor so far as Brees has won a Super Bowl, broken records and has bcome beloved in New Orleans. Sometimes, it works against the player, like former co-MVP QB Dante Culpepper. After his exit from the Vikings, he could never regain the same successful rhythm with another team.
In week 10’s games, 5 offensive stars went down. Alex Smith, Fred Jackson, Michael Vick, and Jay Cutler all suffered concussions and Ben Roethisberger injured his shoulder. It always pays to have a good backup because in a physical game like this, anyone can get injured at any time. It’s odd to have so many people follow injury reports so closely, but in the NFL, it really does make a big difference.
