The thoughts on the idea of Mike Holmgren coming to Cleveland
December 21st 2009 00:51
There are just a few things that must be looked upon and assessed when deciding whether or not, it would be a good idea for Holmgren. Here are the thoughts in general.
1. He should only be brought in as the football head in command. Giving him the extra roles such as a GM and/or a coach would do more harm than good. Conventional wisdom says that trying to do more than one job will cause more harm to a team than it will be a success. In short, it would be best not to give him all positions. Just for the head of football operations spot would be just fine.
2. The curiosity is going to be whether Mangini stays or goes. Truthfully, it will have to come down to what is best for the team. Right now, if they win out, there is a chance he could stay and be given another chance to redeem himself. After all, a coach should get a chance to redeem himself just like players are given such a chance. I said he is likely to be fired and it is a possibility. If they have a credible head coach in mind and not another rookie coach going via the coordinator route or even a college coach route, then maybe it can be justified.
3. It will be interesting who he would pick for a GM. It would be nice to find one that has experience for a change. Is it too much to ask to try to avoid picking another rookie GM? It gets tiresome that Cleveland is almost a training ground for first time coaches and GMs it seems.
4. The team needs somebody credible and Lerner just isn't the guy to do it. It'd be better to have a football mind at work and he knows football well. He was at three Super Bowls and that is no easy feat as a head coach. He has three rings overall dating back to his day with the 49ers as a coordinator.
5. He does have a track record so it should work in theory. For this team, it would be necessary. As long as he has one job being the President or the GM, that will be fine. Personally, let him be the President and then let him select a GM.
Only time will tell. I don't know if that will work. I really do hope it does.
